SAVIGNO  Travel Guide & Hotels

Savigno is a village of 2,735 inhabitants in the province of Bologna.

As evidenced by the many findings found in the area, the territory of Savigno has been inhabited since ancient times, but the first stable settlements are certainly of Roman origin.

Being on the border between the territories of the city of Modena and those of Bologna, Savigno has often found herself in bloody battles, passing from the control of the Countess Matilde di Canossa to that of the city of Bologna, and then eventually, in 1500, part of the Church.

From 2014 Januar  SAVIGNO  is a town hall and also the municipal seat of the new Municipality of Valsamoggia, created by the merger of the former municipalities of  Bazzano, Crespellano, Monteveglio, Savigno and Castello di Serravalle.

what to see and what to do in  SAVIGNO

Very interesting the Church of San Matteo, in the center of the village, built in 1700, where stood the ancient Oratory of St. Matthew. In front of the church you can see the obelisk in memory of the revolts of 1843, when the patriots following Mazzini rebelled against the domination of the Papacy.
A few kilometers away from Savigno is the Regional Park of the Sassi di Roccamalatina which extends for 2,300 hectares on the hills of the Medio Appennino Modenese, rich in chestnut woods. Inside, the sandstone tops of the Sassi stand out, imposing towers that often exceed 70 meters: their origin dates back to the Oligocene, when the whole area was actually a seabed and the underwater currents deposited the heaviest debris, up to form impressive pinnacle-like structures still visible today. Inside the park there are more than one hundred kilometers of trails, suitable for walking, mountain biking but also on horseback, thanks to the presence of many equestrian centers in the area. The many trails offer a wide range of difficulties to choose from, from short ones, suitable for a quiet walk, perhaps with family, to those more demanding and that require a greater level of experience in hiking. In the Park of Roccamalatina there are also some via ferrata, so as to satisfy also the climbing enthusiasts. It is worth getting to Pieve di Trebbio, a magnificent Romanesque building dating back to the year 1,000; the church is composed of three naves, also has a crypt which is accessed through a trapdoor on the floor, and is dedicated to San Giovanni Battista, depicted in a painting of the seventeenth century. Outside the church you can still admire a beautiful octagonal baptistery.

EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS

Various events take place during the year in Savigno: every second Sunday of the month, there is the Old and Antique Market Exhibition, an opportunity for antiques lovers and for those who want to do excellent business, to walk around one of the most popular antique markets in the area. But Savigno is above all the city of truffles, and it is during the month of November that fans of this delicious food will enjoy three weekends full of taste: there are obviously tastings of typical dishes, but also street food, a opportunity to taste the truffle prepared in unexpected ways; all this is surrounded by exhibitions, conferences and also visits to truffles woods and nature walks, even at night, during which enthusiasts can really experience the research and collection of truffles, following the truffle hunters and their dogs.
