MARZABOTTO Travel Guide

Marzabotto is a village of 6,812 inhabitants in the province of Bologna. Its origins probably date back to the Etruscan period. Given its position as a border between the territory of Bologna and Tuscany, a castle was built in Marzabotto, an ancient church that is still well preserved today, and several strongholds. But Marzabotto is sadly known for the Monte Sole's Massacre, carried out by the Nazis in the autumn of 1944 against the partisans.

what to see and what to do - National Etruscan Museum

Interesting the National Etruscan Museum: inside it is possible to admire a very rich collection of finds, pride of the Museum.

It is worth getting to the village of Panico, about two kilometers from Marzabotto, where you can admire the beautiful Pieve di San Lorenzo, of the XII century recently restored, with three naves and a semi-circular apse; splendid are the many small villages that are on the road to Luminasio, where time seems to have stopped, among these Ca 'di Zanetti, Rio (which has a tower date back to 1500 still intact), Casamento, and Montasico, with its castle of homonymous family.

For those who want to go a little further north, not far from Marzabotto is the Nature Reserve of Contrafforte Pliocenico, where you can admire breathtaking but also extremely special landscapes, characterized by badlands and narrow valleys, typical of this area of the Bologna Apennines.

Parco regionale di Monte Sole

If you visit Marzabotto, you can not miss the Regional Park of Monte Sole, which in 1989 was created in memory of the victims of the Monte Sole Massacre by the Nazis. Today the Park is the perfect habitat for many animals, from roe deer to different varieties of woodpecker, and a good starting point for those who love trekking or long mountain biking. Inside the park there is a dense network of trails, marked by the CAI, which take tourists to admire the most remote and interesting corners of the park, such as the Buca del Diavolo, a series of caves that stretch up to 47 meters deep, but also to follow quiet nature trails and with the opportunity to observe the different animals within its natural habitat, or perhaps to reach the archaeological area that contains the remains of the ancient Etruscan city of Kainua, where the findings that can now be admired in the National Etruscan Museum. Inside the park there are also several horse-trading that organize horseback excursions of different kinds, from those suitable for everyone to those that require more preparation, and that allow you to visit the park in a different way than usual.

EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS

Various events take place in Marzabotto during the year: in mid-May a mountain bike excursion is organized to discover the places and symbols of the ancient Etruscans; at the end of June there is the Marzanotte, or the Notte Bianca, at its 8th edition this year, with street artists, live music and food and wine stands; during the month of July, in the archaeological park of ancient Kainua, theatrical performances are organized in the theater of Paglia, an opportunity to visit the Museum and the archaeological area for free and have an aperitif waiting for the start of the show.
