CASTEL MAGGIORE | Bologna
CASTEL MAGGIORE Travel Guide
Castel Maggiore is a city of 18,298 inhabitants in the province of Bologna. In ancient times its name was Castaniolo, and its origins date back to the Roman imperial era, as evidenced by some discoveries made in the area. Given its position, Castel Maggiore was the scene of continuous battles: first the Gothic wars, then it passed under the control of the Exarchate of Ravenna, to be then invaded by the Longobards and the Franks. The name Castel Maggiore dates back to the beginning of the 1800s, and in this period the city experienced a period of industrialization, with the opening of a new mechanical and smelting workshop that was responsible for the construction of agricultural machinery and tools.
what to see and what to do in CASTEL MAGGIORE
Around Castel Maggiore you can admire beautiful private villas, belonging to the ancient noble families of the area, among them worth visiting Villa Zarri, of the 18th century, with the façade decorated with a central tympanum and surrounded by a large park of linden and plane trees; Villa Salina, of the homonymous family, today houses some structures of the Region and has a characteristic gate, decorated with sphinxes; Villa Isabella, from the Baroque period, is the typical Bolognese villa, and you can still admire the beautiful frescoes in the loggia and in some rooms, in addition to the beautiful garden with an artificial lake and several statues. For those who want to do outdoor activities, the Navile Canal and the Lungoreno offer the possibility of taking very pleasant walks, and maybe even get to the ancient Palazzo del Sostegno.
But Castel Maggiore, in addition to being a suitable place for quiet walks, is located in what is now known throughout the world as Motor Valley, a destination for motor enthusiasts and adrenaline activities. The streets of this area are among the most beautiful in the country, and have long been a destination for fans of two and four wheels looking for curves and breathtaking views. Moreover, just 15 kilometers from Castel Maggiore is Borgo Panigale, home of the famous Ducati motor home. Founded in 1926, already in 1946 it has been building avant-garde bikes both from a technical and stylistic point of view. Today, Ducati participates in the Superbike and Moto GP races, winning many victories. Furthermore, in 2015 he presented the Scrambler brand, a perfect mix of new concepts and tradition, available in many different versions, from those suitable for off-road to the more classic ones, to satisfy all his fans. The Scrambler brand also includes a line of technical and everyday accessories and clothing. If all this was not enough, in the Motor Valley there are also 5 racetracks and 11 go-kart tracks, where speed enthusiasts can not only visit places they consider of worship, but also experience the thrill of speed.
