MORDANO Travel Guide & Hotels

Mordano is a village of 4,747 inhabitants in the province of Bologna. The first settlements date back to Roman times, and the first drainages are just due to the Romans, in addition to the construction of roads with a typical orthogonal grid and the leveling of the land. During the medieval period, Mordano was the center of numerous battles between Imola and Bologna, and over the following centuries was subject to numerous territorial and administrative changes, until it became part of the Church.

what to see and what to do

You can’t but notice the two towers that are located at the entrance of the ancient fortified village: they were built in the nineteenth century to replace the ancient gateway and have a faux medieval style full of battlements, that remind the Arsenal towers from Venice. Worth a visit is the museum that is located inside the Sforzesco Tower, a magnificent building of the fifteenth century recently restored in which you can retrace the history of the territory, divided into five sections: historical-archaeological and historical-modern, which retrace the history since antiquity to today; ethno-anthropological, in which are exposed agricultural instruments; historical testimonial, with audio and video testimonies of the most recent past; and the emporium of knowledge and flavors, where it is possible to make tastings of typical products.
Today the Motor Valley is a reality on an international level, an area of Emilia Romagna where the main companies producing cars and motorcycles are known and sought out all over the world. On the sites dedicated to tourism, but also on www.motorvalley.com, you can find many holiday packages or activities related to the motor world, able to satisfy fans of any kind, from those who want to run on the track, maybe even with their own car or motorcycle, to those who are more interested in visiting the many museums and collections that are in this area. Among the collections, to remember is definitely the Battilani Collection, which is worth a visit, given the proximity of Mordano and Imola, just a few kilometers. Benito Battilani was the precursor of collecting vintage motorcycle, now much more widespread, and was able to collect particular and extremely rare samples, such as the Condor, equipped with sidecar, of 1924, or Pennazio. The Collection allows you to relive the history of the motorcycle, from the first "evolved bikes" to the latest models.

EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS

Among the events that take place in Mordano during the year we can find the Carnival, with parades of allegorical floats and the master craftsmen of papier-mâché who gather here from the whole region, in addition to the classic food and wine stands with traditional carnival sweets; at the end of May there is the Festival of Agriculture, an ancient festival of peasant origins characterized by historical parades, displays of vintage instruments and ancient crafts that ends with the Palio dei Borghi, in which 10 jockeys challenge each other in a horse ride; in mid-June there is the Palio del Torrione, in Bubano, historical-fantastic re-enactment that refers to the legendary presence in the area of a dragon, and to the historical presence of Caterina Sforza who built a castle here, today almost completely in ruins.
