SAN GIORGIO DI PIANO Travel Guide
San Giorgio di Piano is a village of 8.472 inhabitants in the province of Bologna.
The first settlements of the area date back to Roman times, but the first documents that speak of San Giorgio date back to 947, when Emperor Ottone called it "Castello Sanctii Georgii", to underline the strategic position and the purely military function of the village ( It should be noted that even the Saint who gives his name to the village is a holy warrior).
At the end of 1300 the castle was further fortified.
what to see and what to do in SAN GIORGIO DI PIANO
In the historic center you can still see the ancient Palaces, such as the Torresotto, in the central square, Palazzo Capuana, all that remains today of the ancient castle, and Palazzo Cataldi, the latter more recent, characterized by a large staircase in the shape of horseshoe-shaped. Worth a visit Villa Beatrice, just outside the village center: this beautiful 1500's villa was built by the Angelelli family from Bologna and inside you can see magnificent frescoes mainly rural theme, with depictions of life in the fields, hunting and fishing, in addition to the commemoration of good works done by the owners, all very well preserved.
For those who love outdoor activities, the countryside of San Giorgio is full of paths and country roads that you can travel on foot or by bike, perhaps to go to one of the nearby villages, such as Funo or Malacappa, for admire places where time seems to have stopped.
If you are lovers of engines but also of medieval castles, then Emilia Romagna is the right place for you, but there is a place that combines both these features in one location, and is the Castle of Panzano, not too far from San Giorgio, where the Righini Collection is kept. Mario Righini, passionate about cars and motorcycles since his youth, has dedicated his life to the recovery and restoration of vintage vehicles. Today, its collection includes 350 vehicles, many of which are of incalculable value. Among these, the Avio Construct 815 of Enzo Ferrari, which ran the Mille Miglia, but also the Alfa Romeo 2300 8C, which belonged to Tazio Nuvolari and with which the great champion won the Grand Prix of Monza in 1933. And the Alfa Romeo cars are the ones that Righini has always loved the most. The collection can be visited only by appointment, and it is the landlord who leads the visitor through the vast rooms of the castle, allowing him to admire his beloved collection.
