CASTEL DEL RIO Travel Guide

Castel del Rio  is a village of 1.229 inhabitants in the province of Bologna. Its origins date probably back to the VI and VII century, as evidenced by some finds found in the area. In the 10th century here was built a Castle, which probably gave its name to the village, but today remain only the ruins. Crucial to the history of Castel del Rio was the Alidosi family, who ruled these lands for 400 years until, in 1638, the Church troops did conquer the fiefdom by throwing out the Alidosi family.

what to see and what to do

It is worthy of a visit to Palazzo Alidosi, built in the 16th century: originally it was supposed to be a monumental work, a fortress-palace reflecting to the grandeur of the Alidosi family, but remained unfinished due to lack of funds; today, however, it is still possible to admire the two great ramparts, three wonderful seashell fountains and a beautiful lodge. At present, the Palace is the seat of the Commune, as well as hosting the Library, the War Museum and the Chestnut Museum
The Bridge on the Santerno River, always commissioned by the Alidosi family, is also very interesting: for the time the bridge construction was a major challenge because it consists of a single 42-meter arcade. Its peculiarity are the five inner rooms, probably made for structural reasons, which allowed the soldiers tax collection. In 1897 the bridge was proclaimed a national monument, and its interior rooms have become an interesting exhibition space.
For the enthusiasts of outdoor activities, the territory of Castel del Rio is part of Alta Via dei Parchi, a route that passes through Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany and Marche and allows you to discover the beauty of the Apennines with its breathtaking views and pristine nature (the itinerary crosses two National Parks, five regionals parks and an interregional one). The itinerary is divided into 27 stages, for a total length of 500 kilometers, suitable for experienced hikers and simply enthusiasts. In the area there are also 10 cycling routes, of various difficulties, called "Ciclovie del Parco". The Regional Park of the Vena del Gesso Romagnola is also worth a visit: in addition to a very rich flora and fauna, thanks to the particular microclimate of the area, you can find ancient remains of human settlements of various ages, for example the remains of the Castle of Rontana, on the summit of Mount Rontana. dating from 973, from which you can enjoy a magnificent view. However, the particularity of the Vena del Gesso is the great presence of caves, many of which can be visited: more than 200 of them have been discovered, for a total of more than 40 kilometers.

EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS

Various events take place at Castel del Rio: between the end of June and the beginning of July there is the Festival of Gnoccata where you can taste the famous fried gnocchi and typical dishes of the Romagna and Tuscan tradition (given the proximity to the border between the two regions);
in conjunction with the Festival of the Gnoccata, also takes place the Renaissance Festival, a cultural-historical re-enactment that recalls the greatness of Alidosi family: inside Palazzo Alidosi you can attend an impressive parade (about 400 participants), as well as historic market reconstructions and military camps, all accompanied by shows of various kinds, from archery to demonstrations of hawk hunting, to conclude with the spectacular fireworks on Ponte Alidosi!
During the month of October, there is the Chestnut Festival, in honor of this fundamental food of the culture of this territory, during which it is possible to buy and eat many dishes of chestnuts, from castagnaccio to polenta made with chestnut flour up to chestnut liqueurs.
