CASTELLO D'ARGILE Travel Guide & Hotels

Castello d'Argile is a municipality of 6,509 inhabitants in the province of Bologna. Its name derives from the Latin "Argiletum", word used by the Romans to indicate a territory rich in clay; the addition of the word Castello dates back to 1380, when Bologna reconstructed the new town in the shape of castrum, a fortified place with defensive purposes, after the original village was destroyed during the struggle for the conquest of Bologna by the Visconti family. Given its proximity to the capital, Castello d'Argile was for a long time part of the jurisdiction of the bishop of Bologna, until, in 1506, Pope Giulio II conquered the territory annexing it to the Church.
