MALALBERGO TRAVEL GUIDE - TO SEE

Malalbergo is a municipality of 8.977 inhabitants in the province of Bologna. Its origins date back probably to the Bronze Age, as evidenced by the discovery of a settlement dating back to that period. It is interesting to remember that Lucrezia Borgia passed from Malalbergo, on her way to Ferrara for her third marriage.

To visit the Palazzo della Dogana, from the end of 1500, seat of Capitani del barcheggio, which served as Customs between the Duchy of Este and the Church; later it was the headquarters of the Napoleonic Gendarmerie and the National Guard. Just the fact of having hosted soldiers for a long time, gave the Palazzo della Dogana the nickname of Casermone. Interesting the Church of San'Antonio Abate, of Roman-Byzantine style, that recalls the basilicas of Ravenna; inside you can see a painting by Massari, a Madonna with Child, and a Altarpiece from the mid-eighteenth century.
If you want to spend some time in the open air, not far from Malalbergo you can find the Bisana and Panfilia floodplains wood, a very large area with a particular aspect: in fact the river has created over the centuries elevated flooded terraces formed thanks to the deposit of debris such as sand and clay, of which these lands are rich, but also includes wooded areas where oaks and elms can be found. Inside the Bosco della Bisana there is a varied and very rich ecosystem, which has allowed many species of animals to find shelter and ideal habitat here. The forest can be visited all year round, although probably the best times are autumn and spring; in addition, within it have been created several routes that allow visitors to admire the natural features that are found here and the animals that live in it.
Another very interesting place is the Regional Park of Delta del Po, about thirty kilometers from Malalbergo, that is one of the largest in Emilia Romagna. This area has been entirely modeled by the water, which is certainly the predominant element: the Park includes what can be defined as the historical delta of the river Po, but in addition to the many marshy areas, are also part of the Park the Mesola Wood and the Pineta di San Vitale, interesting both for the vegetation that grows inside them, but above all for the quantity of species of birds that nest inside; in fact, the Po delta Park is the most important ornithological area in Italy and one of the most important in Europe.

EVENTS AND FAIRS

There are various events that take place in Malalbergo during the year:

  • in May, in Altedo, there is the Green Asparagus Festival, that is a symbol of agriculture in the area, with food and wine stands, local craft markets and live music;
  • between the end of June and the beginning of July there is Birra sotto le stelle, where you can taste many types of craft beer, but also typical dishes of the area, such as tigelle and crescentine;
  • between the end of August and the beginning of September there is the Nettle Festival, an opportunity to discover how to prepare, and then taste, typical dishes prepared with this delicious herb;
  • during Christmas, in Pegola, the Christmas Market is organized, with raviole, mulled wine and local craft stand.
The typical products of Malalbergo are the asparagus and the king's biscuit, named in honor of King Vittorio Emanuele III, who in September 1918 visited the village of Altedo.
