BENTIVOGLIO Travel Guide

Bentivoglio is a municipality fo 5.495 inhabitants in the province of. Its name comes from the homonymous noble family of Bologna, who here built a castle in about 1500, called Domus Jocunditas, that it was for hunt with dogs and falcon, fishing and other entertainments. The origins of Bentivoglio are, however, much older, and date back to the Villanovian period, as demonstrated by some tombs dating back to 930 b.C. and a 6th century Stele that were found in this area; but were the Romans who made the first land dreinage to make this territory healthier, and today some of the remains that proof it can still be seen. The history of Bentivoglio is closely linked to that of the Navile canal, built in the first decades of 1200: this has always been used as a way of communication and exchange of goods, and along its path there were numerous fortifications to defend the border against the neighboring territories of Ferrara, controlled by the Marquis of Este.

what to see and what to do in BENTIVOGLIO

The Castle definitely deserves a visit: the building has all the features of the Renaissance building, it has a square plan, with large windows and a bright courtyard, inside it was decorated with brightly colored decorations, which unfortunately for the most part went lost; very beautiful the Sala dei Cinque Camini and the Sala del Pane, so called because it is decorated with beautiful frescoes that tell the story of bread, a basic food of territory. Is also very beautiful Palazzo Rosso, home of the Municipal Library today, one of the examples of Bolognese liberty architecture: its name comes from the red bricks that have been used to build it; inside it you can admire the Sala dello Zodiaco, with a beautiful decoration made by Augusto Sezanne. Also Villa Smeraldi is very beautiful: today it houses the Museum of Rural Civilization, while on the first floor, at the Salone delle Feste, there are annual concerts and conferences.
For those who love outdoor activities, Oasis La Rizza is the ideal place: located in the northern part of the territory, where old rice fields were once, today the Oasis is a complex environment of wetlands, cane fields, woods and canals, which have allowed a large number of bird species to find here a suitable place to nest. Inside the Oasis there are plenty of trails that, in addition to making beautiful walks, also allow you to approach predetermined observation points that enable you to observe the rich fauna of this place including, after centuries of absence, white storks.
