MONTE SAN PIETRO Travel Guide

Monte San Pietro is a municipality of 11,029 inhabitants in the province of Bologna. Some findings proving that the area was inhabited as early as 2500 b.C., during the Copper Age, but remains were found that also testify the presence of the Villanovan and Etruscan civilization. The first stable settlement dates back to the Roman period. Given its position, to counter the invasions of the Longobardi; the area of Monte San Pietro has always been of great strategic and military importance; precisely for this reason, until the year 1000, many castles, hamlets and fortresses were built here. After being part of the territories of the city of Bologna, Monte San Pietro passes under the control of the Church until the Italy’s Unification.

what to see and what to do in MONTE SAN PIETRO

To be visited :

It is worth getting to Badia to visit the ancient Church of San Fabiano di Lavinio, from the 12th century: here in ancient times pilgrims going to Rome could stop to rest, and in its structure you can still see purely religious elements, such as the church , the cloister and the monastery, and others of civil use, such as the tower. Very nice the small village of Mongiorgio, where you can admire a castle of the tenth century, inside which you can also see the Church of San Sigismondo and San Pietro. Worth a visit is the Church of San Giovanni Battista, in Monte San Giovanni, inside which is one of the most ancient pipe organs of Bologna, still working, dating back to the sixteenth century.
Like some other locations in Emilia Romagna, Monte San Pietro is one of the gems of the Motor Valley, an area dedicated to engines and sports related to some of the most important companies in the world operating in the sector. Monte San Pietro is home to one of the most amazing collections of vintage motorcycles, the Bruno Nigelli Collection, which contains over 300 pieces from all times, many of which are unique pieces of inestimable value. The idea that guided Bruno Nigelli, passionate about mechanics, in the creation of his collection was to tell, celebrate and remember the history of "Bologna Motoristica" that in the period between 1920 and 1970 could boast 84 motorcycle companies and almost 200 mechanical companies working in the sector, active in the area. Many of these companies have now disappeared, but this collection keeps alive the memory of a period and an area that has represented a unique reality in the world. Among the flagships of the collections there are, just to name a few, the Morini 250 bialbero of Tarquinio Provini, with which he managed to get surprising results in the period when the excessive power of the 4-cylinder Japanese was beginning to assert, the Ducati 750 by Walter Villa and a collection of 250 engines, Italian and foreign.

EVENTS AND FAIRS

Among the events that take place in Monte San Pietro during the year we mention the Wine Festival of the Bolognese Hills, early September, with street food stands and tasting of typical wines of the territory, all accompanied by live music; in mid-October there is the Sagra della Caldarrosta, an occasion to taste the chestnuts of Montepastore, particularly prized, as well as other products based on chestnuts; in December there are the Christmas Markets, with food and wine stands and local crafts stalls, an excellent opportunity to buy gifts.
