CRESPELLANO Travel Guide & Hotels
Crespellano is a municipality of 10,117 inhabitants in the province of Bologna. As evidenced by some findings made in the area, it has been inhabited by Villanovian, Etruscan, Galli Boi and Romans, to whom we probably owe the name: in fact derives from the Latin "fundus Crespilianus", or belonging to Crespinius. It was part of the possessions of the Countess Matilde di Canossa, then passed, after several battles with the city of Modena, under the control of Bologna.
Today CRESPELLANO is a town t of the new Municipality of Valsamoggia, created by the merger of the former municipalities of Bazzano, Crespellano, Monteveglio, Savigno and Castello di Serravalle.
what to see and what to do in CRESPELLANO
Very interesting is Palazzo Garagnani, in the center of the town, characterized by a tower that has earned it the name of "castle", even if its origins date back to the sixteenth century; today it is the seat of the library and the cultural center. But Crespellano is known above all for being the Land of the Villas, with a path that leads to admire 10 Villas built between the 16th and 19th centuries, small jewels of Bolognese architecture. Beautiful Villa Bianconi, built in the late 1700s: it is a magnificent building in the neosixteenth-century style, and you can clearly see elements that recall the Rotonda of Palladio. Although the Villas around Crespellano are private, they are periodically opened to host events or on guided tours. It is absolutely worth visiting the Convent of San Francesco, with its relative Oratory, dating back to 1200: this church is considered one of the oldest dedicated to the Saint; the Oratory is open to the public once a year, on 2 August. It is worthwhile to arrive at Ca' Vecchia, in Pragatto Alto, where the artist Antonio Giuliani has set up an open-air museum with his works of contemporary art.
EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS
Among the events that take place in Crespellano, the most important is certainly the Festa Fiera, this year at the 33rd edition, which is take place every year at the end of September: is characterized by food and wine stands with typical products, live music, shows and exhibitions of vintage cars and motorcycles.
