SAN PIETRO IN CASALE   |  Bologna

Walking through San Pietro in Casale you can admire, in Piazza Martiri della Liberazione, three beautiful buildings of the eighteenth century, each one differently characterized: one with a mechanical clock, one with a solar sundial and the last with a votive capital. Very interesting is the Church of SS. Pietro e Paolo, of Romanesque origin and with a bell tower, always Romanesque, which however shows styles belonging to different periods, from the tenth century of the lower part to the mullioned windows of the sixteenth century. Inside the municipal park is Villa Padoa, probably dating back to the 16th century and recently restored. Worth a visit is the small hamlet of Maccaretolo, one of the oldest settlements in the area, where you can still admire the beautiful church of S. Andrea, of the fourteenth century, and the remains of the Palazzo of Giovanni Bentivoglio, of the late fifteenth century; in Rubizzano there is Palazzo Calderini, from the 16th century, characterized by a tower.

Many events take place in San Pietro in Casale during the year: in February there is the Historic Carnival, which dates back to the late nineteenth century, characterized by parades of allegorical floats, masked balls and the traditional bonfire of the mask of "Sandron"; in mid-March there is San Pietro in Fiore: to celebrate the arrival of spring, the historic center set up with food and wine stands and local crafts, tastings of typical products and market of garden products. Also in March there is the Sagra della Forma, during which a form of Parmesan cheese is made, besides there is an exhibition of agricultural machinery, and food and wine stands of typical products.
