MONZUNO Travel Guide

Monzuno is a village of 6.414 inhabitants in the province of Bologna. The first finds date back to the Neolithic Age, but the earliest settlements probably date back to the period of Imperial Rome. In medieval times, the territory of Monzuno was on the border between Byzantines and Longobardi, and its castle was an important center of power until the end of 1300, when it was destroyed.
It is worth taking a trip to Rioveggio to admire the Elle Castle and the Tower of Montorio, partly restored and modernized, as well as the 15th-century Ca 'Marsili tower-house. Very beautiful are the villages of Agadello di Sotto and Croci, whose historic center dates back to the sixteenth century and where time seems to have stopped.

what to see and what to do

Given its proximity to the Regional Park of Monte Sole, those who want to do outdoor activities can take advantage of the dense trail network mapped by the CAI. Inside the Park of Monte Sole, in fact, there are many paths suitable to be crossed by mountain bike, on foot but also on horseback, and in fact scattered throughout the Park there are several horse-trading that organize challenging excursions or even simple walks on horseback. Among the various interesting itineraries, it is worth following the one that leads to the summit of Monte Abelle: this ring route is not excessively demanding and allows, among other things, to pass through the ancient village of Sperticano, where interesting archaeological finds dating back to the Etruscan period were found. Also of great interest is the Church of Saints Simone and Giuda, from the seventeenth century, flanked by a fourteenth-century oratory. Crossing the woods you finally reach Monte Abelle, from which you can admire wonderful views of the Reno Valley; here you can have also a very beautiful view of the cliff over the Rio Burrone Gorgone.
Another interesting excursion, if you move further north, is that of Monte Rosso, which allows you to discover some of the most interesting places and features of the Natural Reserve of Contrafforte Pliocenico. It starts from Livergnano, a small village characterized by picturesque houses carved directly into the rock, to then move towards Monte Rosso; the road runs along the characteristic light sandstone walls that give such a particular aspect to this part of the territory. During the excursion, if you are lucky, you can see the peregrine falcons engaged in the hunt, one of the protected species that has found inside the Reserve an ideal protected habitat.

EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS

Among the events taking place in Monzuno, we mention the Marroni Festival, this year at the 47th edition, and the Tartufesta, both during the first two weekends of October: they are an excellent opportunity to rediscover the typical flavors of autumn, like roasted chestnuts, perhaps accompanied by a good glass of wine, but also the polenta prepared with chestnut flour, topped with a good ragu, or truffle, a fine product typical of the Bologna area, prepared in many different ways to allow everyone to savor it in its different forms, from truffle oil to the one in purity, maybe grated on a nice plate of tortelloni filled with chestnuts.
