MONTEVEGLIO - Bologna
Guide to MONTEVEGLIO
Monteveglio is a village of 5,105 inhabitants in the province of Bologna. Like the surrounding area, the territory of Monteveglio was inhabited in Neolithic times, but there are also traces of Etruscan settlements. However, the first stable settlements date back to the Roman period, around the 1st century AD.
It was part of the possessions of Countess Matilda of Canossa, and after passing under the control of the city of Bologna, the castle of Monteveglio is destroyed and rebuilt several times because it is located in a border area between the possessions of Modena and Bologna, and has been the scene of numerous battles.
Today MONTEVEGLIO is a municipality of the new Commune of Valsamoggia, created by the merger of the former municipalities of Bazzano, Crespellano, Monteveglio, Savigno, and Castello di Serravalle.
WHAT TO SEE AND WHAT TO DO IN MONTEVEGLIO
The abbey comprises two cloisters, one from the fifteenth century, with a double loggia, and one that is older, from which one can admire the panorama of the valley below.
EVENTS AND MANIFESTATIONS
Various events take place in Monteveglio throughout the year: in the first half of June, the Medieval Festival is held in the beautiful setting of the ancient village, during which it is possible to attend historical parades in costume, demonstrations of ancient trades, duels, archery competitions, falconry shows, and the reconstruction of a 15th-century market; in October, the Autumn Festival takes place, an opportunity to taste and enjoy typical seasonal products such as chestnuts and pumpkins, perhaps used to fill tortelli, a typical dish of Emilia Romagna, as well as many sweets like raviole, all accompanied by a good glass of wine.
