BORGO TOSSIGNANO
Guide to BORGO TOSSIGNANO

Tossignano is a municipality of 3,273 inhabitants, in the Santerno Valley, in the metropolitan city of Bologna.
The municipal territory consists of the centers of Borgo (the main town and seat of the Municipio), Tossignano, Codrignano, and Riviera, all three located just a few kilometers from Borgo.
Its origins are very ancient, dating back to the Iron Age (9th-8th century BC), but the name comes from the Roman Thausignanum, as the Roman fortification that gave rise to the first settlement of Tossignano was Roman.
The history of this land is full of battles: first it was the stage for the conflict between the Lombards and the city of Ravenna, then it came under the control of the Bishops of Imola, and during the wars between Guelphs and Ghibellines it allied with the former, only to later fall under the control of the city of Bologna.
In the fourteenth century, Tossignano was again contested between Bologna and Imola, and later by various noble families in the area (the Sforza, Borgia, Altemps, and Spada families, to name just a few). During World War II, Tossignano was almost completely destroyed by air raids.
WHAT TO SEE AND WHAT TO DO IN BORGO TOSSIGNANO

Worth visiting
- - ruins of the Tossignano Fortress, strategically positioned over the entire valley, which was destroyed during World War II bombings; today only the moat and the foundations of the drawbridge can be seen.
- The Church of San Michele is also very beautiful, rebuilt after the bombings: inside one can admire an image of the Madonna della Spiga, the patron saint of the town, dating back to the 15th century.
- - Very interesting and unique is the Sanctuary of the Riviera, dedicated to Our Lady of the Visitation, entirely built with stones and is the oldest in the Santerno Valley.
- For outdoor enthusiasts, the Tossignano territory is part of the Alta Via dei Parchi trail, a route that traverses Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, and Marche, allowing visitors to discover the beauty of the Apennines with its breathtaking views and pristine nature (the trail passes through two National Parks, five regional parks, and one interregional park). The route is divided into 27 stages, covering a total distance of 500 kilometers, suitable for both experienced hikers and casual enthusiasts. There are also 10 cycling routes of varying difficulty in the area, known as "Ciclovie dei Parchi”.
- - The Regional Park of the Romagna Gypsum Vein deserves a visit: in addition to a very rich flora and fauna thanks to the particular microclimate of the area, one can find ancient remains of human settlements of various epochs, for example the remains of the Rontana Castle, on the top of Monte Rontana, dating back to 973, from which one enjoys a magnificent view. However, the peculiarity of the Gypsum Vein is the great presence of caves, many of which are visitable: more than 200 have been discovered, for a total of over 40 kilometers.
