Guide and Hotel in BAZZANO

BAZZANO BOLOGNA ROCCA

Bazzano is a town of 6,917 inhabitants in the province of Bologna.

The first settlements are very ancient, as evidenced by the remains found in the area and now displayed at the Crespellani Museum, while its name derives from Latin, probably from “badianum,” which means domain of an abbey, and in fact Bazzano was for a long time under the control of the Abbey of Nonantola, which in turn referred to the city of Modena.

Given its border position, a castle was built in Bazzano, which was destroyed during a siege and rebuilt at the end of the 1200s by Azzo VII d'Este.

The Rocca was also one of the seats of the Captaincy of Montagna.

Today Bazzano is a municipality and also the municipal seat of the new Municipality of Valsamoggia, created from the merger of the previous municipalities of Bazzano, Crespellano, Monteveglio, Savigno and Castello di Serravalle.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN BAZZANO

Dominating the area is the Medieval Rocca of the Bentivoglio, which underwent modifications at the end of the 1400s when it became the residence of the Bentivoglio family, which at that time governed Bologna. Inside, today you can find the Civic Archaeological Museum Crespellani, where many finds from the area can be admired. Next to the Rocca is the Church of Santo Stefano, probably the oldest in the town.
In the main square, there is the Oratory of Santa Maria del Suffragio, where every Saturday a market takes place, which is one of the most important in the province. A panoramic staircase, known as the “hundred steps,” leads from the main square from the statue of Judith to the Rocca.

A visit to the Sanctuary of Sabbionara is worthwhile, on the road to Castelfranco: built in 1630, inside you can admire particular illusionistic-style frescoes.
Less than 10 kilometers from Bazzano, specifically in San Cesario sul Panaro, all motor enthusiasts can visit the Horacio Pagani Museum.

EVENTS AND MANIFESTATIONS IN BAZZANO

Various events take place in Bazzano throughout the year: at the beginning of February, there’s Carnival, with the parade of typical floats and masks through the historic center, along with food and wine stands where typical sweets from the tradition can be tasted. In June, in the beautiful location of the Rocca, the Solstice of Summer Festival takes place, an opportunity to discover traditional Valsamoggian flavors during a candlelit dinner and a night market set up by local artisans and producers. The Rocca also hosts many events throughout the year, such as food and wine tastings, art exhibitions, concerts, and shows.
The typical product of Bazzano is the Chasselas, a grape with round berries and a very thin skin, particularly tasty, originating from Lebanon and imported by the Phoenicians.
