CRESPELLANO - VALSAMOGGIA - Bologna

Guide to CRESPELLANO

Crespellano is a municipality of 10,117 inhabitants in the province of Bologna. As evidenced by some findings in the area, it was inhabited by Villanovians, Etruscans, Gaul Boi, and Romans, to whom the name may be attributed: it would in fact derive from the Latin "fundus Crespilianus," meaning belonging to Crespinius. It was part of the possessions of Countess Matilda of Canossa, and then passed, after several battles with the city of Modena, under the control of Bologna.
Today CRESPELLANO is a municipality of the new Comune of Valsamoggia, created by the merger of the previous municipalities of Bazzano, Crespellano, Monteveglio, Savigno, and Castello di Serravalle.

WHAT TO SEE AND WHAT TO DO IN CRESPELLANO

Very interesting is Palazzo Garagnani, in the center of the town, characterized by a tower that earned it the name of "castle," although its origins date back to the sixteenth century; today it is the seat of the library and cultural center. But Crespellano is known above all for being the Land of Villas, with a route that allows you to admire no less than 10 Villas built between the 16th and 19th centuries, small jewels of Bolognese architecture. Beautiful is Villa Bianconi, built at the end of the 1700s: it is a magnificent building in neoclassical style, and elements reminiscent of Palladio’s Rotunda can be clearly seen. Despite the Villas around Crespellano being private, they are periodically opened to host events or guided tours. Absolutely worth a visit is the Convent of San Francesco, with its associated Oratory, dating back to the 13th century: this church is considered one of the oldest dedicated to Saint Francis; the Oratory is open to the public once a year, on August 2. It is worthwhile to reach Ca' Vecchia, in Pragatto Alto, where artist Antonio Giuliani has set up an open-air museum with his works of contemporary art.

EVENTS AND MANIFESTATIONS

Among the events held in Crespellano, the most important is certainly the Festa Fiera, this year at its 33rd edition, which takes place every year at the end of September: characterized by enogastronomic stands with typical products, live music, shows, and exhibitions of classic cars and motorcycles.
