ACCURSIO PALACE

It is a vast architectural complex facing Piazza Maggiore, home to the town hall, and consists of two distinct nuclei.
On the left is the oldest part, which belonged to the Accursio family in the 12th and 13th centuries (giving its name to the entire complex), before passing to the municipal magistrature of the Anziani in 1336 and from the 16th to the 19th century it housed the papal legates.
In various epochs different artists and architects have enriched the complex in various ways: Niccolò dell'Arca with the Madonna with Child in terracotta on the facade, the eight windows by Fioravante Fioravanti, the triumphal entrance with the statue of Pope Gregory XIII, author of the calendar reform, by Galeazzo Alessi. Inside there is also a staircase attributed to Donato Bramante, and the works admirable in the various halls: the Hercules Room and the Council Chamber on the first floor, on the second floor the Chapel and the Farnese Room.
Among the various works those by Luca Signorelli, Donato Creti, Giuseppe Maria Crespi, Tintoretto, Ludovico Carracci, Artemisia Gentileschi (Portrait of Gonfaloniere), and Francesco Hayez (Ruth).
From Neptune Square one accesses the former Stock Exchange Hall, the second part of the complex, now the seat of the municipal multimedia library. Through glass floors one can admire the archaeological remains spanning from the 2nd century BC to the 16th century (including those of the Roman basilica).
