GRIZZANA MORANDI
GRIZZANA MORANDI Travel Guide
Grizzana Morandi, a mountain resort in the province of Bologna, is home to suggestive naturalistic settings and sites of historical and artistic interest.
Situated on the ridge between the valleys of the River Rhine and the Setta River, it is enclosed north and south by two parks: Montovolo Provincial Park, habitat of a wide variety of animal and vegetable species, and the
Parco Storico Regionale di Monte Sole, (Regional Historic Park of Monte Sole) , theater of an equally rich biodiversity, but also of the sad event recalled as the Slaughter of Monte Sole in 1944.

attractions in GRIZZANA MORANDI: art and culture
The village of Grizzana Morandi is famous for two important personalities, such as the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and Giorgio Morandi, one of the greatest painters and engravers of the twentieth century.
Grizzana Morandi still hosts the holiday home of the homonymous painter, where the studio, the library and the artist's bedroom are kept intact.
In addition to the Church of S. Maria Assunta di Riola, the only Italian opera by Alvar Aalto, a nod is reserved for the Church of St. John the Baptist: for years she has kept the "Madonna with the Child" of Lorenzo Monaco, currently restored and on display at the Pinacoteca di Bologna.
La Scola is a beautiful fortified village, maintained in its entirety until today, which was built as a military quarter and a defense place in Montovolo's monastic center; here is to visit the Sanctuary with the church that was built before 1000 on a previous Etruscan temple.

attractions in GRIZZANA MORANDI : the manors
Grizzana Morandi is absolutely worth visiting the Rocchetta Mattei, a 800's eclectic castle built by Count Cesare Mattei, a scientist ante litteram who devoted his life to a science he himself called Elettromeopathy, which had its greatest international success over the years 1820 and 1830.
Famous for his "curative art" and for a certain mystery surrounding him, his ingenuity and great allegorical strength of this building, which today has been visited after an imposing restoration work, is yet to be ingrained, even though finished.
In addition to the Castle you can also visit the Archives-Museum with various documents and finds concerning Count Cesare Mattei and his creations, la "Rocchetta" and "Elettromeopatia".

The Memorial Park
Between the end of September and the beginning of October 1944 in these lands there was one of the greatest slaughters of the Second World War: 770 civilians, including old men, women and children, were murdered by Nazi troops as reprisals towards the partisans.
The slaughter of Monte Sole is today remembered with the Monte Sole Historic Park, the first of its kind in Italy, extending for about 6300 acres between the municipalities of Grizzana Morandi, Monzuno and Marzabotto.
In addition to a strong historical and social value, the Park pursues biodiversity conservation goals with more than 900 listed floral species and a rich wildlife typical of the hill and the middle appennine.
Fairs & Gastronomy
During the months of October and November, Grizzana Morandi goes on stage the Tartufesta: a manifestation of traditional memory, all dedicated to the fine white truffle of the Colli Bolognesi.
Between markets and tastings, the city center becomes the scene of an itinerant fair that enhances the beauty of the territory and the genuineness of its products.
Among the main events of Grizzana Morandi, there is also the Festival of Re (King) Zuccherino (Lolly) , scheduled every August 15th. The country's streets, enlivened by a historic procession in medieval costumes, with a parade of somers, celebrate the mountain sugar: this pastry dumpling, covered with icing sugar and anise, is characteristic of the mountain of Bologna and the province.
