FONTANELICE  Travel Guide & Hotels

Fontanelice is a village of 1,936 inhabitants in the province of Bologna. It is located in the Santerno Valley, and its origins date back to prehistory, as evidenced by the many finds found in the area, but there are also traces of settlements of the Villanovan, Etruscan, Celtic and of course Roman times. The origins of the name are uncertain, even if the reference to the element of water is clear. In reality there is also a legend linked to the name of Fontanelice, according to which a young mortal named Elicio fell in love, reciprocated, of a nymph of the woods of the Santerno valley. But their not allow to love each other, pain of death for the young man and the loss of immortality for the nymph, they decided to be transformed, he in a holm-oak, she in a spring that flows right from the roots of that holm-oak; so it was that their sad story gave the name to the village of Fontanelice, but it is only a legend. Returning to history, the country sided with the city of Imola during the wars between Guelphs and Ghibellines, then moved on to Bologna against Imola itself. It was conquered by the Church in 1424, and remained under its control until 1700, when it became part of the Spada family's possessions.

what to see and what to do in FONTANELICE

To enter Fontanelice you pass through an arched door, all that remains of the ancient gateway to the village, protected by a drawbridge, now disappeared, and probably even a moat. On the main square is the Palazzo Pubblico built incorporating what was once the castle of the village, characterized by a beautiful external loggia. Very interesting is the ancient aqueduct, probably from the Roman era, located in the market area: recent archaeological explorations have led to the discovery of a very complex system of tanks, consisting of three large rooms. Also worthy of a visit are the Church of the Madonna della Consolazione, from the 14th century, and the 17th century Sanctuary of the Madonna del Rio.
For those who want to practice outdoor activities, the River Park of the Santerno is the perfect place: its course have been equipped with many areas where you can swim, or maybe a nice picnic; in the river it is also possible to fish, and the waters of Santerno seem to be rich in fish. In addition, along its course there are 25 kilometers where it is possible to practice rafting and rowing, the flow of the river in fact is ideal, especially in the winter months, when the Alpine rivers are not practicable due to the possible presence of ice.

EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS

There are three main events taking place in Fontanelice during the course of the year: on Easter Monday there is the Pié Fritta Festival: on this occasion visitors can taste the delicious pié, a type of fried dumpling, accompanied by cold cuts, cheeses and wine; in the afternoon the traditional race of the donkeys takes place, one for each district. At the end of June there is Fiume diVino, this year at the 16th edition, an event focused, as its name suggests, on good wine and good food that have always characterized Emilia Romagna: therefore, there are food and wine stands where you can taste the excellent traditional cuisine, but also stands dedicated to the wine of the Santerno valley, all accompanied by live music. On the night of August 10th there is Calici di Stelle, an opportunity to spend the evening observing the falling stars and in the meantime enjoying the excellent dishes of traditional cuisine.
